Nobody said turning 30 was easy...actually I have to admit I am approaching my birthday with a jumble of feelings :) but in order to stay true to my mantra of turning 30 with no fluff I need to share some of the many great things turning 30 means to me:
First of all, our culture's obsession with turning 30 as a marker of achievements is a total and complete fairy tale: how many of you own your own place by 30? How many of you are married and have children? Thanks to the movies we have tacked an unreasonable amount of significance to this age but why all the whining? What if you are turning 30 and live hand-to-mouth? Get over it, no one (not even film directors) has the right to set up what 30 year old grownups have to do.
Secondly, I have learnt I am my most valuable asset...yes. The best investment anyone can make is in oneself: take care of yourself and do what you love whether it is bunge-jumping, spinning or just sitting on the sofa as a coach potato: do it and after having invested time in yourself you will realize how stupid you were in your twenties when you thought you were wasting your time.
Thirdly, I was educated on the basis of working towards a goal and I am forever thankful to my parents for this, thankful for not receiving gifts until I had proved I deserved them and thankful because I learnt how to focus on important things. Plus, when you earn something it feels awesomely good!
Fourthly, I have learnt that you can have crushes on many men....yeah haha and friends, lovers and acquaintances come into your life but if relationships are not beneficial to both parties, it is not worth your time. If someone likes you or loves you they will show it but if you need to chase them for their friendship or for their love...it isn't really worth the time- move on!
Lastly, I have learnt to say no and to set boundaries: you won't believe how happy you feel when you do not go to that crappy party someone's hosting on the other side of the city just because you don't feel like it: jeeez, absolute happiness!
So this is it! To many years to come, to celebrate and to share with you guys: cheers to 30!!!
